A little info about Christmas Island kindly sent by Alan Gee:

Christmas Island was chosen for the 1957/58 H bomb tests for it was a remote atoll 1000 miles south of HAWAII and over a 1000 miles north of FIJI. All three services were stationed there and in its hay day boasted thousands of personnel. There were two camps on the island, main camp and port camp [london camp]. I arrived in JAN1963 and left DEC63.  The Americans were in the main camp and we were in port camp. the then British government had leased the island in 1962 for them to carry out H bomb tests. they kept British forces there so as not to give up the island, some 300 hundred of us. Life in 63 was work on Monday, HASTINGS aircraft out to HAWAII to collect fresh food and mail ,it came back on Wednesday afternoon. the other HASTINGS left on Wednesday morning and returned on Friday afternoon.[ very busy day Wednesdays].  Sometimes on a Tuesday an American GLOBEMASTER would come in bringing supplies, the Americans had a fire section but not crash crew trained so on these days we manned up for them. For this service they agreed to feed us and feed us they did, steaks the works enough meat in one sitting that was a months supply in our mess.

The other thing on the island were LAND CRABS by the million, it was an offence to kill them as the smell was disgusting and attracted flies by the million.

The locals were GILBERTESE originaly from the GILBERT and ELLIS islands
